Crimson Desert Character Creation Mod – How to Install and Play as a Female Character

Crimson Desert launched on March 19, 2026, to a mixed reception. Critics and players alike pointed to a thin narrative and a protagonist who generates little enthusiasm. Steam reviews have since shifted, with the game currently sitting at an 86% rating on Valve’s platform, largely on the strength of its gameplay loop and sprawling open world. But one complaint has refused to go away: the game locks you into playing as Kliff, a male protagonist with a famously low-key personality, and it offers no way to build your own character. This is especially jarring given that Crimson Desert comes from Pearl Abyss, the same studio behind Black Desert Online and its highly regarded character creator tools.

Now, a modder has stepped in to fill that gap.

What the Mod Actually Does

On Nexus Mods, modder Khione95 has released the Character Creator – Female mod for Crimson Desert, letting players replace Kliff with a heroine of their own making. The mod works through the in-game barber system and includes 98 face presets and 159 hairstyles. It also adjusts most available armor sets to fit the female body type.

The face presets are amusingly displayed in the UI under the “Beards” category, and Khione95 acknowledges that many of them can look a bit off, as they are not yet adjusting the player character’s facial geometry as intended. Your custom character will also still use Kliff’s default animations for now.

The creator has outlined several improvements coming in future updates:

  • More customization options, including eyebrow shape, eye color, and eyeliner
  • The ability to choose character races beyond human, such as orcs and goblins
  • Replacement of Kliff’s animations with female variants
  • Icons for hair and face options to make browsing easier
  • A male character creator, which Khione95 has confirmed is already in development

It is worth noting that the Character Creator mod modifies the barber mechanics, meaning it is not compatible with other mods that do the same, such as Barber Unlocked.

What You Need Before Installing

Before you begin, make sure you have progressed far enough into Crimson Desert to have unlocked the Barber at the Greymane Camp. The character creator works through this in-game system, and the mod will have no effect until that point is reached.

You will need the following before installation:

  • JSON Mod Manager, available on Nexus Mods
  • Character Creator – Female by Khione95, also on Nexus Mods
  • Kliff Female Voice mod, made by Ev3n5taR, which replaces Kliff’s default voice to match the new character’s appearance

How to Install the Mod

The installation process is straightforward once you understand the workflow. The JSON Mod Manager handles everything, and the key rule is that you always drag unextracted folders into the manager rather than extracting the files manually.

  1. Download the JSON Mod Manager from Nexus Mods, extract it, and run the .exe file. A Windows security prompt may appear, flagging it as unverified; this is standard behavior for unsigned applications and does not indicate any issue with the tool.
  2. Once the manager is open, head to Nexus Mods and download the Character Creator – Female mod. Do not extract the downloaded folder.
  3. Drag the unextracted folder directly into the top section of the JSON Mod Manager window. Two options will appear on the left side of the UI. Toggle both to active, then click “Apply Mods” in the bottom left corner.
  1. Return to Nexus Mods and download the Kliff Female Voice mod. Again, drag the unextracted folder into the manager and click Apply. This step takes longer than the others; if the interface appears frozen, wait it out. A confirmation message will appear in the bottom right corner once the process is complete.
  2. Launch the game using the “Start Game” button inside the JSON Mod Manager. This step is critical. If you launch Crimson Desert directly through Steam, the mods will not be active.

Once the game loads, you will notice that Kliff’s appearance has already been replaced with a randomized look. Fast travel to the Greymane Camp, visit the Barber, and you will find the new hair, face, and color options waiting for you.

The Broader Context

Crimson Desert players have been vocal on social media about wanting more visual customization options, directing their requests at Pearl Abyss. The developer has acknowledged the modding community in general terms. During their annual shareholder meeting, the CEO said that because the mod community is active and the game has a sandbox structure, supporting it would be a strength, though no concrete plans are in place yet, as it would require opening up a significant portion of the engine.

The mod is available exclusively for PC through Nexus Mods. Console players on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S cannot use it without official mod support from Pearl Abyss. For now, PC players who have grown tired of Kliff have a genuine alternative, and it is only going to grow from here.
