If you have been looking for a relaxing Roblox game that rewards patience and curiosity over combat and grinding, Shells is exactly what you need. Developed by A Shell Game, Shells is a relaxing open-world exploration title built around the simple joy of digging through sand and finding beautiful hidden treasures. I have been playing it and putting together everything a beginner needs to know to get started, progress through the islands, and start making serious money from shell collecting.
What Is Roblox Shells?
In Shells, progression is built around exploration, collection, and upgrading your tools. You start with basic gear, a Driftwood Stick, and dig through sand using a time-based mechanic where hitting the right zone improves your success. Once you collect enough shells, you can sell them to a Merchant for Coins and use that money to reinvest in better equipment. It sounds simple, and it is, but there is a surprising amount of depth once you understand how the systems connect.
One of the more charming features of the game is the Hermit Crab companion. You can raise and upgrade your hermit crab pet to help you find more shells, and it will even collect shells for you while you are offline. That passive income mechanic makes a surprisingly big difference in the early game. I strongly recommend prioritizing this early.
How to Dig and Find Shells
To find shells, click on sand to start digging, crawl around until you discover a shell, and when you find one, click when the bar is inside the white area. Keep going until the progress bar is full, and it is okay to miss a few times.

The key mechanic here is timing. Every dig requires you to watch the spinning bar and click at the right moment. Missing occasionally does not ruin the run, so do not panic if you mistime a click or two. As you get better tools, the process becomes smoother and the shells you find become considerably more valuable. In the early game, expect to find common shells like Base Scallops and Sand Dollars, which fetch modest prices at the Merchant. That is completely normal, and it picks up fast once you reinvest your earnings.
Tool Progression: From Driftwood to the Best in the Game
Understanding the tool ladder is the single most important thing for a beginner. Here is the order you should follow:
- Start at the Starter Island with the basic sifters, working your way up from the Rusted Sifter to the Bronze, Steel, Silver, and Gold Sifter in that order.

- The best tool at the Starter Island is the Gold Sifter, so you want to work your way up to it before moving on.
- After the Gold Sifter, your focus shifts to Tide Claws across multiple islands.
- At Crescent Shore, the second-best island you want to grind at, I recommend getting the RGB Tide Claw.
- At the Sea Stack Islands, located inside a secret area, you can get the Frosted Tide Claw, and you can also get the Crystal Tide Claw at this location.
- The Haunted Tide Claw is available at the back of the Starter Island from a ghost NPC, but you will need to save up quite a lot to get it.
- The second-best Tide Claw in the game is the Solar Tide Claw, located inside a cave on Caldera Cay island. You will need to complete a maze inside the cave to reach it, and you will also need the Sun Shard to purchase it. The Solar Tide Claw costs 2.5 million shillings and gives 260 luck, 320 collection speed, a mutation amplifier of 260, and a max weight of 450.
- The best tool in the entire game is the Brine Blossom, available at the So Island for 10 million shillings. It gives 360 luck, 370 collection speed, a mutation amplifier of 360, and a max weight of 560. To access this area, you need to defeat Ambulias in a one-minute challenge where you and Ambulias compete to find the highest value shells.
One critical piece of advice I want to highlight here: do not waste your trait rerolls trying to get a good trait on a tool you are not going to keep. Only use your trait rerolls on a tool you plan on holding onto long-term. This is a mistake a lot of beginners make early on, and it ends up costing a significant amount of resources.
Waystone and Island Travel
On every island, there is a teleporter. By holding E on it, you can unlock a waystone, which allows you to teleport between different islands. We highly recommend activating this at every island you visit, as it saves a lot of travel time when you are switching between grinding spots and the Merchant.
The Hermit Crab System

Beyond its role as a passive shell collector, your Hermit Crab has upgradeable stats that directly affect your income. You can increase your hermit crab’s luck, speed, space, and weight. Make sure you are equipping the best conch you can equip, because doing so boosts the online bonuses of your hermit crab. To find a conch, simply dig on any beach until one shows up, then open the Hermit Crab menu and equip it. You can also claim all the shells your hermit crab has collected by visiting your inventory, so make sure you are doing that regularly to collect your passive earnings.
Mutations, Eclipses, and the Rarest Find
Mutations are bonus multipliers that can attach to any shell you find, dramatically boosting its sell price. The Scorched Mutation, which is obtained during the Eclipse event, gives a 1.7x multiplier. The Eclipse itself occurs every three hours and gives a double luck boost for obtaining the Sun Shard, along with an increased chance of the Scorched Mutation appearing.
The rarest mutation in the game has a 0.01% chance of appearing and gives an 8x shillings multiplier. Landing this on a high-rarity shell is essentially hitting the jackpot, so keep an eye on mutation chances whenever you are grinding during server events.
Charms, Quests, and Working Codes
Quests are given by interacting with different NPCs around the map, and they provide fun challenges that take you across different areas. Completing these is one of the fastest ways to earn money as a new player, and I recommend knocking them out at each island before moving on.
When you open your equipment menu, there are charms you can equip that give various boosts, such as increasing the size of shells found by 50%. Use these whenever you have them available.
For codes, you will need to reach Level 10 before you can redeem codes. One active code is LOTUSBLOSSOM, which rewards two tide charms, a colossus charm, five starfish charms, 5,000 pearls, and five lucky rolls. Head to Settings in the top right corner of the screen to find the code redemption tab.
Final Tips for Beginners
- Always prioritize upgrading your tool and backpack before anything else.
- Sell your inventory frequently rather than letting it fill up with low-value common shells.
- Activate waystones at every island the moment you arrive.
- Do not reroll traits on tools you plan to replace.
- Check in on your Hermit Crab inventory regularly to claim passively earned shells.
Shells is one of those Roblox games that rewards you for playing it your way. Whether you grind aggressively or just casually explore the beaches, the progression never feels punishing. Start small, upgrade consistently, and the rarest shells in the game will be yours before you know it.
