This creature has around 50 HP and deals 20 base damage per hit. What makes it truly threatening is the poison mechanic. Every hit has a chance to apply poison damage on top of the base damage. If you let it land even a couple of hits, you are in serious trouble. We have seen players drop almost instantly if they are not careful, and that is what makes this entity stand out from most others in the game.

How the Scorpion Behaves

Understanding the Scorpion’s behavior is the first step to surviving it. Here is what we know about how it operates:

• It wanders until a player enters its detection radius or deals damage to it.
• Once aggravated, it chases the player and attacks when in range.
• It stops chasing if all players leave its detection radius or if the player gets close to a lit campfire.
• If it strays too far from its spawn without engaging anyone, it teleports back to its original location.

One key thing to remember is that the campfire is your best friend here. We have personally used this to reset its aggro multiple times during longer runs. If you are being chased and you cannot fight back, run toward the fire. It works.

Where to Find Scorpions in the Volcanic Biome

Scorpions do not just roam randomly across the entire map. They have specific spawn points tied to two structures in the Volcanic Biome. The first is the Scorpion Nest, which appears as a bush-like structure on the surface. The second is the Scorpion Pit, a large hole in the ground that contains seven scorpions, a blue-spiked chest, and some resources.

We want to offer you a piece of advice that not many guides mention: do not jump straight into the Scorpion Pit. The scorpions inside can swarm you in seconds and kill you before you even have time to react. The safest way to deal with them is to toss a Wildfire Potion into the pit from above. It clears the pit efficiently and lets you collect the chest reward without dying.

The Poison Mechanic and Why It Matters

The poison mechanic is what separates the Scorpion from most other entities in this game. We are used to managing raw HP loss, but poison adds a damage-over-time layer that keeps draining us even after we move away. The Scorpion is actually only the second entity in the game to apply a negative status effect on players, the first being the Frogs.

This means we cannot just tank hits and bandage up as easily. We need to kill the Scorpion fast, dodge consistently, or accept that we will burn through our healing items much faster than usual. Bringing extra bandages before heading into Scorpion territory is strongly recommended.

Scorpion Shells: The Real Prize

When we defeat Scorpions, they have a chance to drop Scorpion Shells. These are uncommon pelt drops, and the drop rate is one of the lowest in the game. Do not expect to get a shell every time you kill one. We have had sessions where we cleared multiple scorpions before we saw a single shell drop.

But here is why we grind for them anyway. Scorpion Shells are the primary crafting material for one of the most powerful pieces of armor in the game: the Infernal Helmet. To craft it, we need six Scorpion Shells and one Cultist King Antler. The helmet is crafted at the Anvil in the Tool Workshop area.

Once equipped, the Infernal Helmet reduces incoming damage and gives us immunity to burning. That means walking through lava pools in the Volcanic Biome without taking burn damage. This is a huge advantage when we are deep in exploration and valuable loot is sitting right in the middle of a lava pool. There is also a creative use for the Big Game Hunter class: consuming 10 Scorpion Shells gives us a 15% chance to poison enemies on attack, which makes us effectively use the Scorpion’s own mechanic against other enemies.

Tips for Surviving Scorpion Encounters

We have died to Scorpions more times than we would like to admit. Here is what actually helps us stay alive:

• Always carry extra bandages before entering Scorpion territory.
• Do not fight multiple scorpions at once. Pull them one by one if possible.
• Use the campfire to break their aggro if things get too heated.
• Avoid the Scorpion Pit until you have a Wildfire Potion ready.
• Farm Scorpion Shells in batches across multiple runs rather than trying to get all six in one session.

The most underrated tip we can share is this: plan your Scorpion farming runs at the same time as your biome exploration runs. You are already in the Volcanic Biome looking for fuel, oil barrels, and chests. You might as well clear every Scorpion Nest you walk past and bank those shells gradually.

Before the Volcanic Biome update, our survival strategy was fairly straightforward. We collected fuel, leveled the campfire, and managed entity spawns at night. The Scorpion pushes us to think differently.
