The Deep Update has given Fisch players a lot to chase, and the Cusk Purger Rod sits right at the top of that list. This craftable rod is tied to some of the hardest materials in the entire update, and getting it takes real patience. We spent hours grinding it out, and we want to walk you through exactly what it takes, what it looks like once you have it, and whether it is actually worth the effort.
What the Cusk Purger Rod Is
The Cusk Purger is a craftable rod added with the Deep update. Its name comes from the Monstrous Cusk, the massive creature you need to hunt down to get one of its core ingredients. Unlike drop-based rods, this one is built entirely through crafting, so you need to gather every material yourself before you can even attempt it. That makes it one of the more involved rewards in the update, alongside gear like the Titanic Scalder.
Materials You Need to Craft It
Crafting the Cusk Purger requires seven different materials, and you need three of each one. The full list includes:
- Monstrous Cusk Tooth
- Line of the Deep
- Refined Scrap
- Hardened Chitin
- Abyssal Bofluid
- Radiant Prism Scale
- Ancient Bone
On top of the materials, you also need 750,000 in-game cash to finish the recipe. That price tag alone tells you this rod is meant for players who have already spent serious time in the Deep. None of these materials come easy, and a few of them will test your patience more than the actual fishing does.
Where to Find the Trickiest Materials

Most of the materials come from fishing and exploring the Outer Deep, but two of them cause the most trouble for players. The Radiant Prism Scale drops from certain fish you catch in the outer areas, and it is a random chance rather than a guaranteed reward. Sea bass-type catches and red bait fish seem to give better odds, so focus your fishing sessions there if you are stuck on this one.

The Monstrous Cusk Tooth is the material tied directly to the boss fight. You have to catch a Faceless Cusk first to trigger the Monstrous Cusk encounter, then survive a multi-stage harpoon chase before you can claim the tooth. Using high disturbance gear and stacking disturbance buffs helps the boss spawn faster. We put together a full breakdown of this fight in our Monstrous Cusk catch guide, and it covers the perfect catch timing in detail.
Line of the Deep is not something you fish up directly. It comes from a side quest tied to trading in Radiant Prism Scales, so you will likely need extra scales beyond the three required for the main rod recipe. Budget for six or more scales total if you want to avoid backtracking later.
Cusk Purger Stats and Passive
Once crafted, the Cusk Purger comes with the following stats:
- Lure Speed: 88 percent
- Luck: 225 percent
- Control: negative 0.05
- Resilience: 25 percent
- Weight capacity: infinite
- Progress Speed: plus 40 percent
- Disturbance: plus 7
The rod’s description ties its passive to the same creature it is crafted from. It pulls in predatory deep-sea catches through a vacuum-style effect, and in practice this shows up as a slash mechanic during reeling. These slashes speed up your catch progress noticeably, especially against tougher fish that would otherwise take a while to reel in.
The rod also carries a monstrous mutation that appears fairly often, close to a fifty percent chance based on our testing. This mutation pushes catch value up by roughly nine times compared to a normal catch, which is a solid multiplier for a craftable rod. We compared results side by side, and the difference in sale value was hard to ignore.
Is the Cusk Purger Worth the Grind
The honest answer depends on what you value in a rod. The stats are genuinely good, and the slash passive paired with the monstrous mutation makes this a strong pick for anyone grinding value fish in the Deep. Negative control is a small tradeoff, but the near-infinite weight capacity and high progress speed more than make up for it.
Where the rod falls short is presentation. It does not have a custom control bar like some of the other Deep rods, and the monstrous mutation currently shows no visual effects at all. For a rod that takes this long to craft, players expected a bit more polish. Several players have already flagged this as feeling unfinished compared to other new gear.
Even with those rough edges, we still recommend crafting the Cusk Purger if you plan to spend real time in the Deep. The passive alone puts it ahead of most other craftable options right now, and the mutation odds make grinding with it genuinely rewarding. Just go in expecting a long material hunt, especially around the Radiant Prism Scale and the boss fight for the tooth.
If you are working through the rest of the Deep update, pair this guide with our Titanic Scalder walkthrough and our Monstrous Cusk catch guide to speed up your overall progress. Between the three, you should have most of the hard grinding covered before you move on to the update’s other rewards.
