Roblox has long been one of the biggest gaming platforms for children worldwide, but keeping younger players safe has been an ongoing challenge. Now, the company is making a significant structural change. Roblox is introducing two new age-based accounts for younger users: Roblox Kids for users ages 5 to 8 and Roblox Select for users ages 9 to 15. When they roll out in early June, these accounts will more closely align content access, communication settings, and parental controls with a user’s age. Here is a complete breakdown of what these changes mean for players, parents, and developers.
Why Roblox Is Making This Change
Roblox is the world’s biggest social gaming ecosystem for kids, with more than 151 million daily active users, and has faced mounting scrutiny over allegations that it failed to shield its young users from child predators and inappropriate content. The move comes as Roblox implemented mandatory age checks in January for all users who want to access chats, with the same age-check technology now being used to assign users to these new accounts. This continuation of safety work makes Roblox the first online gaming platform to require facial age checks to access chat, and since that rollout, over 50% of global and 65% of U.S. daily active users have completed an age check.

As Roblox Chief Safety Officer Matt Kaufman put it, “Safety isn’t a static feature — it’s a journey that evolves as a child grows. These age-adaptive accounts are designed to help remove the guesswork for parents and help align users’ experiences with their age.”
What Is Roblox Kids (Ages 5-8)?
The age-based account system will automatically assign users ages 5 to 8, as determined through Roblox’s global age-check technology or by a verified parent, to a Roblox Kids account. These accounts will be matched to a dynamically updated catalog containing thousands of select games.
Key features of Roblox Kids accounts include:
- Access is limited to games with a Minimal or Mild content maturity label that have passed the three-step selection process.
- All communication is disabled by default.
- The only way a child with a Kids account can chat with another user is if their parent selects specific individuals the child is allowed to communicate with.
- The design will include a distinct background color across the app experience to indicate account type.
What Is Roblox Select (Ages 9-15)?
Roblox Select accounts are for users ages 9 to 15, as determined through the universal age-check system or by a verified parent. These accounts will also be matched to a dynamically updated catalog containing thousands of select games.

Key features of Roblox Select accounts include:
- Access is limited to games with content maturity labels up to and including Moderate that have passed the three-step selection process.
- Users with Roblox Select accounts will be able to chat with users in a similar age group.
- The design will include a distinct visual treatment to indicate account type.
- Parents have the option to approve specific games for their children that are not available under their account’s default restrictions.
How Account Progression Works
One of the more practical aspects of this system is that it is designed to grow with the child automatically, with no action required from the family.
Users will automatically transition from Roblox Kids to Roblox Select accounts when they reach age 9, and from Roblox Select to standard Roblox accounts when they reach age 16. At age 16, users will have full access to the platform and all of its features, except restricted content, which is limited to users age 18 and older.
Users who have not yet completed an age check will be limited to games rated Minimal or Mild, and all communication will be unavailable. After completing an age check, users will automatically move into the appropriate age-based account.
The Three-Step Game Selection Process
Not every game on Roblox will be available to younger users by default. For content made available to users under 16, Roblox will apply an additional continuous process that dynamically selects games, including developer verification, extended content evaluation and rating, and additional limits on content more suited to older audiences.
The three criteria for a game to be included in the Kids or Select catalogs are:
- Developer verification: Creators must complete ID verification, enable two-step verification, and maintain an active Roblox Plus subscription.
- Real-time evaluation: Roblox will analyze how users aged 16 and older interact with new games and monitor user reports to assess suitability before making games available to younger users.
- Content maturity rating and default exclusions: By default, Roblox Kids and Roblox Select accounts will not include games that feature sensitive issues, social hangouts, or free-form drawing games.
Roblox believes that age-checked users under 16 will have access to the vast majority of their favorite games at launch, while age-checked users 16 and older will not see any change to their experience.
Expanded Parental Controls

Alongside the new account types, Roblox is extending its parental controls, which allow parents to manage content ratings, communication settings, and screen-time and spending limits. These tools also transparently show parents which games their child is spending time in and who their friends are.
The specific new and extended controls include:

- Extending granular game blocking: Parents can block specific games for individuals through age 15.
- Extending chat management: Parents can manage direct chat settings through age 15.
- New granular game approval: Parents can now approve access to specific games that are not otherwise available under the child’s default account type.
Transitioning to a Global Ratings Framework
Looking further ahead, Roblox is not stopping at its own internal content labels. Later this year, Roblox will begin transitioning to the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) framework, the globally recognized standard for assigning content ratings to digital games and apps. These region-specific ratings, such as ESRB in the U.S. and PEGI in much of Europe and the U.K., reflect local cultural norms and will help families identify age-appropriate content.
What This Means Going Forward
The rollout of Roblox Kids and Roblox Select marks a meaningful shift in how the platform handles safety for its youngest users. The introduction of age-based accounts builds on the age verification measures Roblox launched this year, though the earlier rollout was quickly met with user complaints of inaccurate age estimations and workarounds found by users hoping to trick the system. Whether the new framework resolves those gaps remains to be seen, but the addition of a three-step game vetting process, automatic account progression, and more hands-on parental tools gives families considerably more structure than before. The accounts are set to roll out globally in early June 2026, with a transition period allowing existing users to complete the age-check process.
