If you have been playing Fisch seriously, you already know that mutations are the backbone of high-value fishing. They change how a fish looks, and more importantly, they multiply how much it sells for. Most mutations come and go with RNG, but the Departed Mutation is different. It is one of the most talked-about additions from the Venue Takeover Event, and I think it deserves a focused breakdown because there is a lot to unpack here, from how you get it to why it matters more than most players realize.
What Is the Departed Mutation?
The Departed Mutation is exclusively tied to the Remembrance Rod, one of the most elusive fishing rods introduced during the Venue Takeover Event. Once applied to a fish, this Mutation multiplies its value by 10.5x, making it one of the most valuable Mutations in the game.
To put that number in context, most top-tier non-event mutations in Fisch sit in the 9x to 10x range, with the likes of Ascended at 9.9x, Requies at 9.8x, and Astraeus at 9.6x. The Departed Mutation at 10.5x clears all of them, which is a significant deal for anyone grinding for sell value.
The Departed Mutation is among the newest Mutations added to Fisch with the Venue Takeover Event. This Mutation is one of the rarest in the game, rivaled by the likes of Prismatic in terms of acquisition difficulty.
How to Get the Departed Mutation
This is where things get involved, and I want to be straightforward with you: getting the Departed Mutation is not a quick process. Everything runs through the Remembrance Rod, and the Remembrance Rod has its own quest chain.

You can get the Remembrance Rod by completing the questline given by the Luneth NPC in the Underground Music Venue. The quests that are part of this questline include catching and returning one Forgotten Orca using Thalassar’s Ruin Rod and catching and returning one Glowy Penguin with Crab Cages. Finishing this quest awards you the restricted version of the Remembrance Rod.
After that, there will be a lot of butterflies. About 180 in all, with various mutations requested by Luneth. This will fully unlock the Remembrance Rod and award you with the Butterfly Lantern.
Once you have the rod in hand, here is what you need to know about actually triggering the Departed Mutation:
- The Mutation has a 50% chance to be applied to the caught fish, but only if the Remembrance Rod is in Departed (dark) mode.
- You can swap between the two modes using a toggle in the Remembrance Rod’s entry in the Fishing Rods menu.
- You need a total of 19 Butterflies with the Departed Mutation as part of the quest to fully unlock the Remembrance Rod’s passive ability.
We would strongly recommend planning ahead and not rushing through just one quest at a time. The Venue Takeover update is designed so that tasks overlap heavily and are meant to be completed together, not one by one. That is the trick most players miss.
How to Access the Underground Music Venue

If you are not sure where Luneth even is, here is a quick rundown. You can access the Underground Music Venue from Crystal Cove by placing a Chaotic Enchant Relic on a pedestal in the cove. When you do, a trapdoor around the coordinates 1350, -604, 2330 should open and give you access. From the overworld, find a whirlpool with a wispy light coming out of the top, jump into it to travel to Vertigo, and then fish the pool at the bottom of the pit until you find an item called a Depths Key.
It is a layered process, and I will not sugarcoat it. This is end-game territory in Fisch.
What Does a Fish With the Departed Mutation Look Like?
One thing I genuinely appreciate about the Departed Mutation is that it comes with a distinctive visual identity. A fish affected by this Mutation becomes pitch-black, with dark butterflies surrounding it as part of its particle effects. The effect is quite stark and unique among the aesthetic changes caused by other Mutations.
For comparison, the Fluttering Mutation (the Living mode counterpart) turns the affected fish bright white with stark white butterflies surrounding it. This is the exact opposite of the visual changes that accompany the Departed Mutation. The two mutations essentially mirror each other visually, which is a nice design touch that makes them feel paired.
Departed vs Fluttering: Which Is Better?

Both mutations come from the same rod, but they are not equal in value. The Fluttering Mutation applies a 7x value multiplier, which is fairly moderate for limited Mutations. It is noticeably less potent than its Departed mode counterpart, which makes it less favorable for general fishing purposes.
So if you are fishing for raw coin value, Departed Mode is the one to stay in. That said, like the Departed Mutation, the Fluttering Mutation is also required as part of the quest to fully unlock the Remembrance Rod’s passives. For this, you need a total of 19 Fluttering Butterflies as well.
In practical terms, we recommend spending the majority of your fishing time in Departed Mode and switching to Living Mode only when you need to progress the Fluttering butterfly count for quest purposes.
The Remembrance Rod’s Fishing Mechanics
There is one more thing worth knowing before you start grinding, and it directly affects how smoothly your sessions go. While fishing with the Remembrance Rod, two cursors will appear on the bar: a white cursor and a black cursor. The white cursor increases your Progress Speed while it is on the fishing bar, while the black counterpart reduces it. If both cursors are on the bar at the same time, their effects cancel each other out. The idea is to keep the white cursor on the bar at all times to see the progress speed skyrocket.
This mechanic makes the Remembrance Rod feel different from standard rods, and it takes a little getting used to. Once you get the hang of tracking both cursors, though, it becomes second nature.
Do Not Miss the Window
This is perhaps the most important thing I want to stress in this guide. The Remembrance Rod is a Venue Takeover-exclusive fishing rod, and once it expires, you will be left without any way to get the Departed Mutation. Be sure to complete the associated quests at the Underground Music Venue to ensure you do not miss out on the Remembrance Rod and, by extension, the Departed Mutation.
The Venue Takeover event went live on 2nd May. Since the event is active for a limited and unspecified duration, there is no guarantee how much time remains. Given that some of the quests are pretty involved, getting started as soon as possible is the smart move to avoid being left in limbo with an incomplete endgame rod.
The Departed Mutation is genuinely one of the strongest limited mutations Fisch has added. If you are at a stage where you can access the Underground Music Venue and take on Luneth’s quests, do not put it off. A 10.5x value multiplier on your catch is the kind of reward that changes your economy in this game, and once this event ends, that window closes for good.
